I'm finding this whole thing extremely divisive though? Usually I kind of pride myself in being able to see the nuances or whatever, or being able to listen to other points of view, be flexible and change my opinion, but I'm unusually hard-line about this topic. Like, I know people who're ok with this GG stuff (and people linking the Sommers video) and it's like...

It's not just that I vehemently disagree with the whole gater methods and gater origins (though, obviously, I do) it's just like, how can you watch that video and not immediately be confronted with all the flaws in her argument? How could you possibly call yourself critical and rational and just, fail to see it?

She's arguing with a statement nobody has made. She's arguing as a response that Anita and the 'hipster cultural critics' actually ARE out to destroy games, and ARE attempting to censor and police art. If we were to assume all that was true, then Sommer's assertion that "games don't MAKE you misogynist, racist and violence" would make sense. But who is she responding to? Because the hipster cultural critics didn't say that.

And "it's not sexism, it's just appealing to guys, and guys like guns and sexy women"? wtf? Did anyone else find that a bit... of a generalisation towards the 'ungentle sex'? :\ Because, sure, the straight guys I know are not adverse to bewbs or guns, but they aren't stupid, either. They're going to know the difference between being given something intelligent that might happen to *contain* boobs and guns, and something that is grade A dumb shit that is trying to paste over that on the basis of "I HAVE LOTS OF GUNS AND SEXY WOMEN. HEY, YOU'RE A GUY AND LIKE THIS STUFF RIGHT? BUY ME!"

...Granted, most of the guys I know who play games aren't teenagers and leave their basements once in a while -.-;

Was having a related convo with the SO about this, I think it ties in as well with the 'toxic masculinity' idea that Sarkeesian is currently being lambasted for.  (Because there is a misunderstanding that masculinity = men, so toxic masculinity must = all men are toxic.  I do not understand how such people logically order their thoughts to get out of bed and put clothes on without incident.  Pull covers off = socks?) 

But anyway.  To quote Morrisey (who has, admittedly, said some crazy things but this one is worth saying) "it takes guts to be gentle and kind." Particularly if you're a guy being told by certain regressive numpties that to be gentle and kind is to be effeminate, not manly, or 'beta'.  

It's quite the fucking opposite of 'beta', actually, it takes strength of character.  You shockingly awful assholes -.-;; 



I have tried to use it, tbh.  Mostly to point out that it's better to be engaging with the text of what someone has actually said, rather than what you think about the person behind the words or what their intentions are. And to point out that criticism of representations and tropes in themselves is valid, and not actually saying the devs were intending to be misogynistic.  

There's some weird ideas flying around about art and criticism that I've noticed  

Someone argued that Anita shouldn't have made her series without asking the devs what they intended, and justified this by telling me if da Vinci was alive, you could just go ask him about the Mona Lisa, and that would clear it up. 
Well, yes you could, but how would that make your own interpretation less valid than his intention, and how would you know he's telling the truth?

The codewords are annoying, as is the phraseology.  'SJWs' is an annoying term to use as a pejorative.  (I get what they mean, they mean censorious political correctness and thought policing.  But when you've decided to bundle that into the term 'Social Justice Warrior' and define yourself by it's opposite, you are essentially saying you are against social justice.  Which is essentially a self-declaration that you are a shit heel).  

The thing that's annoying me most is the 'LW' bullshit.  I first encountered that 'debating' with someone, and he was talking about Zoe Quinn and was using 'LW'.  And I was thinking, eh?  I know they doxxed her real name, but I can't remember the initials being LW?  Then it turns out this means 'Literally Who?' as if they're supposed to not know who the individual is, as if they are beneath their attention and they've never heard of them. 

Well, if Zoe Quinn is so beneath your notice that you've never heard of her, stop talking about her. 

The cognitive dissonance involved in rifling through someone's personal life and history and then saying "literally, who?" is mind-boggling.

Not directly gamergate related but wtf is this? Full disclosure I have used the "lol you just got raped" kinda insult in the past, I no longer do it and I would have never dared to say it to a woman. Glad the organizers straight up booted this asshole, a lesson learned is a lesson learned. What saddens the most however is that she was apparently dogpiled by a bunch of assholes later for being a "crybaby".

I find it very aggravating because I love competetive gaming. The fgc especially is very diverse and welcoming as whole, it's all about the hype and skill, nothing else realy matters. Therefore I can't stand it when assholes like this corrupt competetive communitys from within.
