Feel free to talk about whatever games you're currently playing here.
Right now I'm alternating between Phoenix Wright 5 on the 3DS and Diablo 3 on the PS4.
Phoenix Wright is one of my favorite series. I'm a sucker for a text-heavy comedic point-and-click lawyer adventure game, I guess. I'm also happy to see that they've managed to make the new 3D character models look just like the 2D sprite models from the previous games.
Diablo 3 works really well on consoles. Just as addictive as it can be on PC, without the stupid always-online requirement that always seemed to kick you offline in the middle of your game.
I also got Destiny, but I haven't cracked it open yet. Anyone playing it?

Ooh, I've spent many hours in Diablo 3, I'm having a real issues with it being addictive. Currently I mostly alternate between Dark Souls 2 (love the series), Hearthstone (although I mostly just do daily quests), and whatever interesting new indie stuff is covered on Rock Paper Shotgun. The last one is called It Moves and it's a short horror game utilizing SNES JRPG aesthetics. It's based on some short horror story, deals with the theme of childhood nightmares, and works quite well overall, considering it's a small free game.
Can we maybe make a thread about some relatively obscure/indie games? I might try to cover some of them from time to time. There's just too many of interesting stuff out there, which won't quite fit in the "what you are currently playing", because a lot of those games can be finished in an hour, but their value is not necessary in their replayability. What does everyone think about it?

I've been wanting to try out the Dark Souls series, as I've heard nothing but great things about it. My problem is I have an enormous backlog dating back to games I bought for the SNES when they were new. I have gaming OCD where I must explore every nook and cranny of the map in every game, do as many of the quests as possible, etc. That makes each game take up so much time for me, so the backlog always gets bigger and bigger! Please, make any kind of thread that you want here! That's what this place is for. I want discussions about anything and everything here Let me know if it's not giving you permission to create a new thread or anything. I think you should be able to, but I'm still getting used to the inner workings of this forum software.

Oh, I feel you. I'm not so compulsive about this, and I can manage to walk past some shiny items glittering in the distance so tempting (ahem) in Dark Souls 2 because I know already what they are, but it can be tough.

Eeeyyyy, Phoenix Wright! I'm so glad to hear that the latest game looks okay; I haven't bought it yet.
When I was planning to do a PhD, the topic was going to be analysing the localisation of the Ace Attorney series. As a translator, I found the abundance of puns and humour in the English version amazing! So much love.
Right now I'm purging myself of games because I've been so disgusted by this whole Goebbels Goat thing, but despite that I have an overwhelming craving to play Jill of the Jungle, an old DOS game. I just can't seem to get it to work for Windows 8.1 T__T

I'm currently playing Destiny, mostly because I got it for the white PS4 and I wanted the games that will be coming out for it soon. (The Order, Bloodborne, No Man's Sky) It's very overhyped and not as good as it should be...but there is something about it that just keeps making me play it more. I currently have a level 27 Warlock who looks badass and me and my friends are on the last part of the first raid, which is actually fun and challenging.
I also got a PC build that can play most PS3/Xbox 360 generation games, been playing Dark Souls 2 but I needed a break from that, will get back to it soon. Just got the early access game of The Escapists, which seems to be a RPG prison break out game, looks cool enough. Also hoping I get into the Bloodborne alpha, signed up for that last week.

I wonder if Bloodborne will eventually get a PC release. On a side note, there's Ellie in Dark Souls 2!

Most likely not, sadly. Sony is publishing it themselves and they wanted it to be a new IP for the PS4. (Kinda like Demon's Souls, the predecessor to Dark Souls)
One can hope tho!

I've heard that Destiny is a mixture of terribly frustrating things and insanely addictive things. I'll give it a go once I can pry myself away from Diablo. The Phoenix Wright series has done some great localization work! It's also funny when they have to explain why they go to many Japanese locations in the game, as they set the game in the US in the English localizations. I'm at a part now with a Japanese village, and it's a "theme park founded by Japanese immigrants". I've played some of the games in Japanese too, which is lots of fun for someone learning the language like me. I can't wait for the 3DS release of the original trilogy that has updated graphics and a polished up localization. You can also switch between Japanese and English for all the games Haha, oh Ellie, you have such a cold and beautiful Steelheart. The first thing I did after buying Diablo 3 for the PS4 the other day was to make a character and name her Ellie

Oooh, you can switch between Japanese and English in the reboots of Ace Attorney? That will be AMAZING for if I ever get back to my PhD. As it was I had been using two emulators side by side to do my comparisons.

Yep! I think it might be a download-only title, just like Phoenix Wright 5 was. So it'll have to be available on the 3DS eShop for whichever region 3DS you own. I hate that they decided to region lock the 3DS.
The original JapanesePhoenix Wright DS release also contains both the English and Japanese versions, and you can switch between them anytime in the main menu. If you can track that cart down, it's region free!

Huh, I had the ROM of the original Japanese version and I was unable to do that. Maybe I got a dud!

Currently playing: The Sims 4, Desert Golf, Ys 1 & 2, ongoing games of Civ V, and Kokuga. I think it's going to be Katamari replay time again soon too.
I'm actually enjoying the Sims 4 a lot more than I thought I would. It seems to have a lot of negative buzz around it, and as far as I can tell the primary complaint is that it doesn't have as much stuff as the previous Sims games. While that is true, the stuff that is in this iteration is higher quality than many of the mechanics in the previous entries and their expansions. Sims 3 felt like they just piled a shit ton of ideas into one game with no regard for how the individual systems operated together. This one feels more cohesively designed.

Civ V! Yay! I go through phases of being hopelessly addicted to Civ IV for weeks on end. I want to ask, though: would you say that Civ V is better than IV? I bought V and tried playing it but I felt that there had been some options from IV that were removed which I really liked, so I went back to IV. It was a while ago so I don't really remember the features I'd enjoyed, which doesn't really help, but yeah! What are your thoughts on V?

I think Civ 5 is better now that there are a few DLCs for it. It adds back religion in a meaningful way. And it adds XCom squads, because yay cross promotion! That's the problem with some big PC series, they are too reliant on expansions and mods to become the game they should have been in the first place.
I'm currently playing Super Mario Sunshine because I've given up on new triple A games hitting the promise of good story/characters. Might as well play something that doesn't even try.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about DLC. If it's a genuine expansion, then yay, but sometimes it definitely looks like they were originally meant to be in the game but the developers ran out of time to finish them. You should totally play Toonstruck, Kirk. It's like Tex Avery: the game.

Just got Diablo 3 last night for my PS4, so I'm finally catching up with everyone else in the world.
Also picked up The Escapists for the PC (Coming to Xbone soon) on Early Access. It's a prison break game in retro graphics, kinda cool so far.

I haven't been playing games much this week. Been occupied with studying for the JLPT, futzing around on Twitter, and watching TV shows. By the time I've done studying, I'm more in the mood to watch Star Trek Voyager on Netflix than I am to play a game. I added various gaming account names to my signature, if any of ya want to befriend me

I've bought Shovel Knight yesterday and had troubles stopping playing it, surprisingly! Despite it looking like a NES game (it uses the same palette and even has some similar limitations, although not very strict), it's built around modern design principles, and is quite fun and hard enough without getting frustrating. Although I probably wouldn't recommend it to mrnarse, as there's a lot of secrets and stuff to collect.

Ohoho! The only thing that's kept me from buying it already has been my indecision on which platform to purchase it on: PC, 3DS, or Wii U. 3DS and Wii U both have some unique features in their ports, but PC is PC and there will always be PCs that can play it.

Well, can't give much advice on that, but I guess a PC with a gamepad attached isn't that different from a console for gaming purposes. Unless you are one of those purists who think games can be only played with keyboard and mouse.

After finding the game for about 10 bucks in a supermarket bin, I finally played through Asuras Wrath over the week.
I have never had so many anime clichees and idiotic quicktime events thrown at me in my entire games related life and the combat system is almost insultingly bare bones for someone who played stuff like bayonetta, wonderfull 101 or metal gear rising. Yet I could not help but love every minute of it. It´s the dumbest "game" ever produced by a capcom at the absolute height of theyr "lets fuck our customers" dlc phase, seriously the true ending chapters are dlc you have to pay for wtf, but I just admire the pure unadulterated hype and the "yes we know this is utterly retarded and we are 1000% serious about this" additude the game gives of.

I LOVE Capcom for Monster Hunter series, it's the only reason I've bought a PSP a couple of years ago. Interesting thing about games who are full of cliches and are quite dumb but at the same time you just can't stop playing them. Don't know of any recent examples, but I'd argue Diablo falls into that category (all 3 of them.)

I think Capcom is 90% responsible for the stereotype that Japanese companies can't write stories.

I almost worked for Capcom. T_T I like capcom, street fighter and monster hunter are among my favorite games. They're still one of the worst companys when it comes to squeezing money out of people though.

I'll always have a place in my hear for Capcom. From playing their Mega Mans and Disney games on the NES, to Street Fighter II and Breath of Fire on my SNES, to the original Resident Evil games on the PS1, to Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube, to Okami and Phoenix Wright and Minish Cap, there's a whole lot to love.
Though I admittedly haven't played many of their titles (aside from the Ace Attorney stuff) from recent years.

Yeah, Ace Attorney was the main Capcom title that I liked.
Unfortunately, there is a reason that the company isn't known for its innovative ideas. I got cosy with a Capcom producer when I lived in Osaka and he was telling me how he used to plug all these ideas about how to make games better, including bringing more indie designers on board, but they were all turned down in favour of things like "Monster Hunter VVII" - things that had a proven track record and were "guaranteed" to bring money in.
Then again, it's kind of normal in my eyes for a Japanese company to be like that. Businesses there are notoriously resistant to change.

It's kind of ironic because Monster Hunter at first was quite an innovative game with some really good design ideas, and I can go on a rant why it's so good. Oddly enough, the series isn't super popular in the West - to the point where the MHP3rd for PSP didn't get a Western version.
