It's not like I've the King's eclectic taste&knowledge in all things auditory, but... well, I just have to share this, for I live left of the Rhine:
...
Also... something y'all probably think of as "German". It rocks, anyway:
So... all that shit is is just here to start the thread.
Plug some real shit, you beautiful people!

I dig 'em! I don't really know anything about the German music scene, aside from old Klaus Nomi songs. It's definitely more mellow than my mental image of what German music would be. Here's a cover of a famous old German poem/song, as sung by my favorite artist in the world, Japanese singer/songwriter Shiina Ringo: Unfortunately, the online practices of the Japanese music industry is pretty backwards, so many of her most popular videos are region blocked (the same as the second video you posted above). But you can find some audio-only videos: She also formed a band (Tokyo Jihen) for 8 years in between her solo activities: Her first original non-cover non-compilation album in over 5 years just got announced today (made the promo image my icon here), so I'm pretty excited

Ha ha, I remember Stefan Raab. He was in Eurovision that one year with "Wade Hade Dude Da". :B
One of my friends does a great Shiina Ringo at karaoke. Can't remember the name... 丸ノ内線? The song is named after the "Marunouchi" Tokyo train line I used to take to university every day, and as it happens the line that was the site of the Sarin gas terrorist attacks several year prior... eheh.

Ah, 丸の内サデスティック "Marunouchi Sadistic"! The various English and Japanese versions are all great. She actually wrote the song in English first, even though the Japanese version was on her first album. I don't think there was an official English album version until about 10 years later.

Normally, I'm not exactly a fan of his - but that guy's musical talent is fucking *impeccable*. Speaking of the ESC:

As for the thread's general theme so far: I'm pretty fucking ignorant about all things Japanese... so this is the Japanese song I love the most:
(I do own two Pizzicato Five albums, though. Honest!)

Why do European singing competition shows always seem better than the American ones to me? Maybe it's just the accents. Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts are pretty awesome. She's done the music of so many classic animes. I downloaded some Pizzicatto Five a long time ago, but I never got around to listening to them. 30 seconds into watching one of their videos on Youtube and I love them already

You know me. I'm a huge fan of enka. They're sung so dramatically, and the gist of basically every song is "I loved you so much but you left me and now I'm going to kill you and then drink myself to death". When I lived in rural Shikoku I was involved with writing/performing in several amateur musicals, and one of the songs I wrote was a "Weird Al"-esque adaptation of one of my favourite enka songs: "酒よ" (sake yo) where I changed the lyrics to suit the theme, in this case Captain Hook lamenting to a non-partisan character the story of how the evil Peter Pan cut off his hand (and didn't even apologise!). Here's the original song (and the best!): And in case you're interested, here's a quick version I recorded back in the day to help Captain Hook learn how to sing his song (didn't have very good recording software at the time so it's a bit raw): soundcloud.com/kav-p/genki-musical-hooks-lament-with-guide-vocals/s-zVygiNeedless to say, Hook's Lament went down particularly well with the older crowd. During one performance of the song, an elderly woman came to the front and threw a bag of money on the stage (a sign that a kabuki or other performer has just delivered a particularly touching performance)! Next came the underwear... Note: If you ever go to Japan to mingle with locals, LEARN AN ENKA SONG BEFOREHAND. You will be the belle of the ball at karaoke.

I can find you some proper boy band if you want, though.

Novi novi novi novi gooooooaaaaat! What a catchy tune!
Here's some Enka for Kav, a song written and arranged by Shiina Ringo (of course) for one of the most popular Enka artists, Sayuri Ishikawa:
I tried listening to your Enka recording, but the link doesn't seem to be working.
And here's some Janelle Monáe for everyone, just because:

Yay, Sayuri Ishikawa! Her most famous song, 天城越え, is another karaoke favourite of mine. You can easily see in the video how most live performances end: the singer either looking like they're dying, or openly weeping :B I didn't realise she had ties with Shiina Ringo. I was so close to learning enka-style singing when I was working in Japan. Too bad Japanese work hours are crap... Edit: By the way, I fixed the broken link to my Pirate song.

Hi, I'm a weird music liker. I like rap, experimental and normal. I like post rock, especially Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And I enjoy some indie bands as well.
I'll post three songs, see what you guys think.
This is Don, Aman by Slint. The album Spiderland, along with two albums by Talk Talk created the genre of post rock, though neither really sound like what post rock today sounds like. The definition of the genre is simply "using rock instramentation to make non-rock sound" so it allows for some very different sounds. Don, Aman is to me the perfect musical representation of being socially awkward. The whispered lyrics describe a man who feels completely out of place at a party. The song itself strips away the drums found on the rest of the album, leaving the spoken lyrics and angular guitar rhythms that haunt and wander.
Secondly I give you a experimental rap group in cLOUDDEAD. The lyrics don't make sense of first (or tenth) reading, the background music is more atmospheric than you find in the rap tradition. The rappers Doseone and Why? style could be best described "smartarse surrealism" which makes sense once you've heard the album a few times. I picked the song apt a because it has a lovely backdrop and it includes the lines "Something's been left out of this game/ God did you remember to render everything?"
Lastly I give you probably the most well regarded indie band of my lifetime, Neutral Milk Hotel. While working within the pop tradition, two things make the band unique. First the band's sound includes an ever-present lo-fi hum, giving the band a definite garage feel. Secondly, singer Jeff Mangum fills his lyrics with a rich yet bleak world. Their best album, In the Aeroplane over the Sea, is a very emotional reaction to Anne Frank's diary. The song I am picking is definitely the pop single of the album, Holland, 1945, which would be the most connected to Anne Frank. The rest of the album is more thematically connected.

mrnarse, good call on that, they certainly do sound like Snarky Puppy. I'll have to check them out more. niko I can't stand the screechy stuff, and some of the improvisations can leave me cold (which is funny since I love improv), but I really love the standards as well as the more melodic stuff out there. I can sometimes make exceptions for sheer musicianship though.

I wasn't as heavily into Rare Nintendo games as I was for other Nintendo games (Blast Corps excluded), but I couldn't resist buying all those jaunty Banko & Kazooie tunes, and in FLAC format! Kav, nice Enka singing! If you had inserted polite audience applause in between the verses, I would've thought I was listening to an NHK broadcast. Behold, the Obachaaan rap!
