Hello fellow Ellies,
since I am a fighting game enthusiast (although my enthusiasm sadly doesn´t transfer into skill ) I wanted to make a thread to chat about all this fighting game related and to maybe find some nice people for some friendly facial reconfiguration, without recieving messages about how much donkey dick I supposedly suck (even though all in all the fgc is probably the friendlyest competetive community compared to certain others *cough*dota2*cough*).
In general I love fighting games because they are the best examples in videogames of expressing character through action, both for the player as well as the ingame characters themselves. Fighting game characters convey theyr entire personality through theyr fighting style and the way they look, look at sakura in a fight and you immediatly know what shes all about in terms of character (as yahtzee says it, they are celebrations of character above all else). This translates to the players as well and thats what makes fighting games the best genre for 1v1 competetive games imo. I think the most important skill in fighting games is to be able to read your opponent and to do that, you need to be able to think from theyr perspective. Finding out wether you enemy is easy to anger in certain situations, how he reacts if he becomes frustrated, what his go to panic reactions are or how well he manages under pressure is vital and what truly seperates a master from say... me. Of course the technical aspect comes into this as well but I would argue that this aspect merely an extension of the mental aspect. To be able to execute a difficult combo you need the technical skill of course, but you also need to the mental awareness and stability to pull it of under pressure or other unideal circumstances.
So thats why I love fighting games now to the ones I actually play, wich are rather few considering my glowing praise of the genre.
My all time favorite is street fighter 4 (ultra versionas of late) and my main in this game is Balrog (well hes technically not my main but the only character I´m semi decent at ). A lot of people dislike it because of it´s comparably slow and defensive pace but that is pretty much why it´s my favorite. It also has the best balance of combos compared to single hits. By this i mean the damage of single attacks isn´t completly negligible compared to what combos can do, combos are short difficult but they do hurt a lot and don´t give you enough time to go make a sandwich while the other guy is basically performing a guitar hero solo on his arcade stick.
Second is Blazblue:cs Extended edition (thanks for not giving bringing chrono phantasma to xbox arcsys, it´s not like I wanted it or something) in wich I main Hakumen (same deal as in sf hes the only guy i can play). I like the game for it´s balls out crazyness while still not gliding into UMVC3 instant kill combo territory. The variety in each individual character in fantastic and the combat mechanics are deep as fuck, I´m also a sucker for 2D sprites and animeeeee`ish stuff so it´s a match made in heaven.
I will pick up Super smash brothers on the wii u once that rolls around. The demo on the 3ds is already fun as hell and this looks like a game in wich I will actually be able to main multiple characters (wich will probably be Ike, Link and Littlemac GO TEAM DUDEBRO ).
My xbox gamertag is PainizzKrampf so if anyone ever wants his facial features arrangent in new and interresting ways, holla at me (but let me know who you are from here else I may think you´r just some weirdo who wants to find out where I live or somthing).
Lastly this is supposed to be a thread primarly about fighting game stuff but that doesn´t mean that other genres can´t be discussed. For example if you wanna talk about the merits of other genres in comparison to fighting games feel free to do so, I for example feel that dark souls pvp combat comes very close to fighting games with the hole "what is he gonna do and how do I get him to make a mistake" aspect.
